A Picture Review of the Old Cars
of Australia
"Australian cars"

These cars date from 1916 to 1976 and include some very interesting pictures.
Many of these pictures of Australian Cars were sent to me by Les Pendlebury from
Australia. Recently Steve Levy, Declan Foley, Graham Allum and Mark Forbes
all from Australia have contributed a number of pictures to this page.
I think that they will be of interest to anyone who like old cars.

A story of a Hudson Survivor
1937 Hudson Straight 8

Andrew Szery, Queensland, Australia.
Here it is, my 1937 Hudson Straight 8
After 20 years, she is back on the road in probably better than her original condition, thanks to the genius of restoration advice and assistance, Mr Kevin Hickling.

In 1987, I was on a hunting trip near my hometown of Corryong in NE Victoria, when I discovered this vehicle among an eclectic mix of wrecks in varying degrees of decay and vandalism on an old farm. She looked forlorn but unscathed, except for missing rear window, all rubber seals, no floor, rust throughout, a completely concave roof  (which I was later told this was from carting hay bales), smashed in RH mudguard (came off second best in a collision with a Black Angus Bull), all the windows were down and the seats were growing things local to the area, and this all fertilized and cared for by a prodigious colony of rats. I approached the owner, a laconic Yugoslav named Bish who said "Take it, it's been there for 25 years, I don't want it...frst the motor she bugger up, then the gear box it buggered. I fix the bloody gear box then the diff it buggers up, I fix the bloody diff then the bloody crank shaft it busts, no mate you can have the bugger for all I care." I borrowed a car trailer and took the old thing to my uncle's where it sat in the corner of the machinery shed for the next 14years.

1998 - enter Kevin Hickling, classic car show Burwood, Sydney, driving up the long avenue of trees to the central park at the wheel of a magnificent white 1937 Hudson 8 Deluxe. It was the first time I had ever seen a 'live' one. He was a very busy man, but somehow I convinced him to help me restore my car, and in 2001 I trailered it to Taree where he went over it from stem to stern, inside to outside and gave me an encyclopaedia's worth of advice. This translated into five years of hard work and a million phone calls. The result of patience and optimism and a love of Hudson's have put one more survivor on the road.

Another restored Terraplane

This picture was submitted to my site in late 2003 when this page was first started. It was submitted by
Les Pendlebury and was owned by Phil Haxby from 1977 to may 2013. This picture was taken prior to 1983
Ken Mackie from Melbourne, Australia bought the car in late 2003 from an ad in the Auto Trader

The originial story posted a few years ago
This 55 Chrysler has an interesting story to tell.
The picture was submitted by Lynn Ramage and it was owned by her father, Ken Triller.
I'll let her tell the rest of the story.
"My dad had this 1955 Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe Convertible forever. It was Emerald green with a white leather and green upholstered interior with a 331 Hemi with only 52,000 original miles to her. My mom drove it daily and bumped a little ding in the front bumper so he took the car off her and put her into a smaller Ford. The car sat and was given to me at age 16 where I sanded it down and started restoration. My dad stuck it in a friends barn and there it has been sitting for the past 20 some years now. My dad recently died and didn't tell me where the barn was, I have an idea it is close to the New Hope PA area. I called all the junk yards around and nothing has come into the yards in
the past 2 decades that they recall up there. My title has only 10 digits the the bureau of records don't go back that far.  I search the net in hopes but still nothing has turned up.
Here is a picture of her in her prime and I was in at 5 years old.
I live in Bucks County, PA USA.  Near New Hope where the car was last seen. My dad's friend's  was Don Newman who owned the barn and collected cars. He had over 40 Cadillac's from the 40's - 50's.  Don and his wife divorced in 1995 when my car was last seen, the farm was sold and he moved the car (my dad was the only person who knew where the car went to and didn't tell me, so I have the title to it...but the car is MIA. I can totally ID it from various markings. My dad's business was antique car restoration."

This 1934 Ford UTE was submitted by Robert Ryan Sans Souci NSW Australia
He had the following to say about his UTE.
"This example is classed as a modified production vehicle by the inspecting Engineer sanctioning it for full street Registration.
The body is totally stock as ex factory. From 1932 Fords were mostly V8's as was this one. You are not likely to see another or for that matter a better example any time in the future. All steel, full leather trim, everything under and over either chromed, stainless steel or billet aluminium. All the rare factory accessories including the Ford Greyhound Radiator Mascot.

The first Coupe utilities in the world were designed and built at the Ford Plant in Geelong,Victoria. in 1933/34.

Not a pickup but known as a utility vehicle or as we know it now a ute. The back "grafted" to a 1934 x ?2 Door Coupe Body.
Unlike a pickup the rear section was a one piece metal stamping from the Coupe suicide doors back.
The plaque on the cowl states "Coachwork Ford Geelong"

The idea was for buyers to go to church in comfort out of the weather on a Sunday and take the pigs to market on a Monday.
Very few remain,a handful in fact as they were used as farm vehicles."

This Hudson UTE was seen outside a panel repair shop in Rutherglen. It has a straight eight cylinder engine.
What a beauty. It appears that someone is going to restore it to its former glory. It looks like a 1936/38 1937

This car is owned by Sandra Rickards from Victoria, Australia
She believes there are not more than three of these cars on the road in Australia that she can establish.  It was her parents car when she was born and they drove it up until about 1955 when the fan went through the radiator and her father just parked it.  Lucky he did and kept it as long as he did only to give it to her which she has had for about 10 years.  It was 5 years in the restoration stage and only back on the road for February 2009 some 80 years after manufacturer.

This picture was submitted by Declan Foley from Australia.
He had the following to say about the picture.
"Attached is a photo of a 1946 Hudson Terraplane. This was the first new car to be registered in County Sligo Ireland immediately after WW11. It was originally grey and was painted black as the man that purchased it, Jack Gallagher, was an Undertaker. My Dad Gerry Foley was employed by him around the same time. My Dad is pictured here standing between the ladies on the driver's side. It was sold in 1951
and alas, I cannot trace it's history after this."

This has been a 4 year restoration from a total rustbucket.
As you can see in profile, Australian cars have a different tail to USA models. There are a lot of other minor differences as well such as inside door handles and window winders. They are not interchangeable between Australian cars and USA cars.

This Coupe Utility was built by GM -Holdens in Melbourne Australia. Continued as civil production after the war until
the body style change in 1946 (but still continued as a model
in that new style).
Lang has restored it in it's WW2 colours and is shipping it to Istanbul, Turkey in Feb 09 to drive all the way to the 65th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy France. Seats on side are standard GMH and were offered after the war to civil
market as the "wellside" option.

This car was supposed to have come from CANADA - sent to
Sth Africa for the Canadian airforce during the war - was then purchased by someone and apparently knocked down and sent
to Australia,  with another  whole car, in a crate.
The 'putting together' is very average and eventually
we will spruce her up.
The people never assembled her and eventually - according to the story - they went to an antique dealer for furniture and were short of money so Charlotte was part of the payment. The old fellah then put it together - probably about 20 yrs ago. Consequently
the mileage is around 10,000 miles!
