A picture Review of the Old Cars of Australia

These cars date from 1916 to 1976 and include some very interesting pictures.
These pictures were sent to me by Les Pendlebury from Australia.
Recently Steve Levy, Declan Foley, Graham Allum and Mark Forbes
all from Australia have contributed a number of pictures to this page.
I think that they will be of interest to anyone who like old cars.

A story of a Hudson Survivor
1937 Hudson Straight 8

Andrew Szery, Queensland, Australia.
Here it is, my 1937 Hudson Straight 8
After 20 years, she is back on the road in probably better than her original condition, thanks to the genius of restoration advice and assistance, Mr Kevin Hickling.

In 1987, I was on a hunting trip near my hometown of Corryong in NE Victoria, when I discovered this vehicle among an eclectic mix of wrecks in varying degrees of decay and vandalism on an old farm. She looked forlorn but unscathed, except for missing rear window, all rubber seals, no floor, rust throughout, a completely concave roof  (which I was later told this was from carting hay bales), smashed in RH mudguard (came off second best in a collision with a Black Angus Bull), all the windows were down and the seats were growing things local to the area, and this all fertilized and cared for by a prodigious colony of rats. I approached the owner, a laconic Yugoslav named Bish who said “Take it, it’s been there for 25 years, I don’t want it…first the motor she bugger up, then the gear box it buggered. I fix the bloody gear box then the diff it buggers up, I fix the bloody diff then the bloody crank shaft it busts, no mate you can have the bugger for all I care.” I borrowed a car trailer and took the old thing to my uncle’s where it sat in the corner of the machinery shed for the next 14years.

1998 - enter Kevin Hickling, classic car show Burwood, Sydney, driving up the long avenue of trees to the central park at the wheel of a magnificent white 1937 Hudson 8 Deluxe. It was the first time I had ever seen a ‘live’ one. He was a very busy man, but somehow I convinced him to help me restore my car, and in 2001 I trailered it to Taree where he went over it from stem to stern, inside to outside and gave me an encyclopaedia’s worth of advice. This translated into five years of hard work and a million phone calls. The result of patience and optimism and a love of Hudson’s have put one more survivor on the road.

1929 Nash Coupe Cabriolet
This car is owned by Sandra Rickards from Victoria, Australia
She believes there are not more than three of these cars on the road in Australia that she can establish.  It was her parents car when she was born and they drove it up until about 1955 when the fan went through the radiator and her father just parked it.  Lucky he did and kept it as long as he did only to give it to her which she has had for about 10 years.  It was 5 years in the restoration stage and only back on the road for February 2009 some 80 years after manufacturer.

This picture was submitted by Declan Foley from Australia.
He had the following to say about the picture.
"Attached is a photo of a 1946 Hudson Terraplane. This was the first new car to be registered in County Sligo Ireland immediately after WW11. It was originally grey and was painted black as the man that purchased it, Jack Gallagher, was an Undertaker. My Dad Gerry Foley was employed by him around the same time. My Dad is pictured here standing between the ladies on the driver's side. It was sold in 1951
and alas, I cannot trace it's history after this."

This car is owned by Ron Willetts
Lemon Tree Passage,NSW., Australia.
This has been a 4 year restoration from a total rustbucket.
As you can see in profile, Australian cars have a different tail to USA models. There are a lot of other minor differences as well such as inside door handles and window winders. They are not interchangeable between Australian cars and USA cars.

This Coupe Utility was built by GM -Holdens in Melbourne Australia. Continued as civil production after the war until
the body style change in 1946 (but still continued as a model
in that new style).
Lang has restored it in it's WW2 colours and is shipping it to Istanbul, Turkey in Feb 09 to drive all the way to the 65th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy France. Seats on side are standard GMH and were offered after the war to civil
market as the "wellside" option.

The owner is the 4th owner. He bought the Hudson from
someone in Queensland.  It had been sitting in a shed for many years. It was purchased new in 1952 for 2,4000 pounds –
a lot of money.  Hudson’s were imported into Australia in
