A Brief History of Henry Ford
and the Ford Motor Car Company

The Ford Motor Car Company started with one man's dream of putting America on wheels.
That man was Henry Ford

Born July 30, 1863 Henry Ford, grew up on the family farm in what is today Dearborn, Michigan.
Henry's childhood was that of a typical boy living in rural nineteenth century, going to school and doing farm chores. He had a dislike for farm work but an interest mechanical things which showed at an early age.

Henry  Ford left home in 1879 for the nearby city of Detroit. He was sixteen at the time and going to work as an apprentice machinist. He worked at this for three years and then returned to Dearborn. Upon his return he operated and repaired steam engines, finding occasional work in a Detroit factory. He also over-hauled his father's farm implements in his spare time.
In 1888 he married Clara Bryant and supported himself and his wife by running a sawmill.

In 1891, Ford he went to work for the Edison Illuminating Company in Detroit as an engineer.
He showed a great interest in industrial pursuits. He was promoted to Chief Engineer in 1893.
This gave him enough time and money to devote attention to his personal experiments on internal combustion engines.
These experiments led to the completion of his own self-propelled vehicle, the Quadricycle in 1896.

Although Ford was not the first to build a self-propelled vehicle, he was, however, one of several automotive pioneers who helped this country become a nation of motorists.

In 1899 Ford quit his job at Edison and with the help of some investors, he started the Detroit Auto Company
which ended in failure.

Ford moved back to his father's home in 1901. He built a car on his own and with it beat Alexander Winton in an automobile race. This attracted more investors and enabled him to form the Henry Ford Co.
Ford withdrew from that company and it became Cadillac in 1902.
In 1903 he formed the Ford Motor Co. The Model A was produced in a rented plant on Mack Ave.
This arrangement last for one year and in 1903 he built a plant on Piquette Ave.
This building is still standing and being restored.
In the same year Ford of Canada was founded in Windsor Ontario.
By 1906 Ford had overtaken Olds, Buick and Cadillac combined to become No.1 auto maker in U.S.
In the same year Henry Ford became the company president and majority owner.
The famous model T was introduced in 1908 and as we all know the rest is HISTORY.

These pictures came for a number of sources including web
pages of the manufacturer, news groups and my own.
Since most of these pictures came from news groups there may be a
chance that your car is shown here.

I would like to invite any one that has a favorite Ford picture or a Web Page

By the mid 50's people had developed a great love for their cars
and went to every extreme imaginable to look after them properly.
The car garage became almost a necessity and some garages went the extra distance.
Something a little different
The car on the left is owned by Norm & Bernice Bunko, Shelton Wa
The car on the right is owned by Buzz and Shirley Philips Union Wa
The 51 Ford is featued below but the one on the right is a creation of Buzz Philips. For years he has been installing new stuff on old Ford and Chevys, I think he has found the best of both worlds. Its called an easy rod. The looks of a 50 Ford but a1995 T Bird running gear & amenities with out all the modifications it takes to install this kit is a bolt and screw togeather no cutting or welding and looks great! and no overheating problems.
It fits on 89 to 95 T Birds& Cougers.
If any one wants further information please go to this site. Easy rod.com

1956 Ford Parklane Wagon
This car is owned by Bill Story. He had the following to say
about this car.
"I was referred to your mid-fifties Ford site by Tony "50 Fraud" Miller.  I really like his sense of humor,....and his design sensitivities.  We have become friends because of our Ford projects.
I have attached several pics of my 56 Parklane that was just completed.  It's not a stocker, as you can see, but the modifications are within the theme of what the car would have been like had I worked on it, "back in the day!"  I am originally from Detroit but now the car and I reside in So. Calif."

Frank had this to say about the tail light on his 56 Ford.

" I consider this to be the best looking tail light in Ford History.  That being the 55 Mercury Monterey Station Wagon Tail Light, which just happens to fit right onto the 55 and 56 Fords and Thunderbirds for that instant custom look.  That gorgeous tail light appeared only on that one year and one model Merc,
but is heavily coveted by most every Ford owner I know."

Bill had the following to say about his car.
"I used to be involved with the Fabulous 50's Ford Club of America, based in Southern California when I lived in California from 1974 to 1995. I had a number of '50's Fords including a '55 Tbird Goldenrod Special and a '58 Edsel. All are gone to other owners now and I have just one left. It has always been my favorite. It is a 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Sunliner. Torch Red and Colonial white. I restored the car back in the mid '80's and now I just drive it for fun in the summertime.

This 1958 Ford is owned by Scott
and he had the following to say about his car.
"I just came across your site.  Very nice!  I thought I'd sent you a link to a few pictures of my Ford, since you don't have any like it on your site.  It's a 1958 Ford Fairlane Town Victoria Tudor...according to the brochure from 1958.  The trim package on the sides is a factory option that tends to throw people off when they see it.  Most think it's a Chevrolet since this trim resembles that of an early Corvette.  It's a stock car, except for the body modifications.  It's been nosed, decked, shaved, blocked in the rear, and has an airbag system on the front."

1958 Ford Custom 300 built in Oakville, Ontario was purchased from it's original owner in 1959 by my father
Andrea Lepera and later passed on to Domenic Lepera of Markham, Ont, the present owner in 1974.
This beauty was 95% restored in 1987 and has been a first place show winner on many occasions since. In 1987 it was featured on the first page of the 1987 DuPont calendar. All part are original NOS and with only 59,000 miles, this automobile still turns heads and drives well on the mountain roads in Vermont when on summer vacation. Today the car is only in need of ¼ window rubbers which I have just tracked down and waiting to get them made then it will be %100 complete.
