A Picture Review of the  Henry J and Allstate
The cars that were 10 years ahead of their time

A number of years ago I saw a one page calendar that showed all the Ford
pickup trucks from the first one to the present day. I thought , what a nice idea.
I thought that I might try something similar with some of the car pictures I have collected.
I have been collecting pictures of Studebakers, Packards and Jeeps for
some time now and I first wrote a web page on the Studebaker.
Then one on Jeeps,  American Motors, Pickup Trucks and Volkswagen followed.
Next I thought I would try a web page on the Kaiser and Henry J.

These pictures came for a number of sources including web pages of the manufacture,
news groups and my own.
Since most of these pictures came from news groups there may be a chance that your car is shown here.

I would like to invite any one that has a favorite Henry J picture or a Web Page
that they would like added to this page to
E mail me a copy.

After a nearly 20 year search, Eric's car was found by a Kaiser-Frazer
Club member.  On January 14th 2006 the present owner allowed Eric
and this K-F Club member to view  Eric's car and take some snapshots.

Surprisingly, it is only 99.9 miles from the New Jersey driveway where
Eric had built/rebuilt this convertible in the early 60's.
It is now stored in a barn and needs lots of TLC. There are no major damages,
as these pictures show..........

!!!!Coming Home !!!!
The following announcement was received from Eric Gordon
on the 28th of April 2006.

A Brief History of the Kaiser/Fraser

In 1945 California industrialist Henry J. Kaiser partnered with automobile executive Joe Frazer to respond to the American consumer's postwar demand for cars, mounting the last real American challenge to Detroit's Big Three automakers.
They produced cars like  1949 Kaiser Vagabond, 1948 Frazer Manhattan, 1953 Kaiser Manhattan two-door sedan, the  Dragon sedans, and Henry J compact coupes as well as some modified Henry J race cars.
The Kaiser and Frazer Manhattan series were mainstays of the company lineup.
Kaiser and Frazer automobiles were manufactured at Kaiser's Willow Run, Michigan, factory from 1946 to 1955, when declining sales forced the closing of Kaiser's domestic operations.
At that time production was moved to Argentina and Brazil, where the company turned out a series of sedans, trucks and Jeeps until the company was sold to a combine of Ford and Renault owners in the late 1960s.

A brief history of the Henry J
The Henry J was introduced at a Chicago showing in February 1950 but it was not put on sale until September 1950
as a 1951 model. The price for the car was $1299.
The reason for this price was that the car was built using  government funding from the Reconstruction Finance Corp. Part of the agreement was that the car would sell for $1300
This price as achieved by stripping the car of a lot of features that were considered standard equipment such as a trunk lid and glove box.

Approximately 115,000 Henry Js were produced for the models years 1951, 1954
plus 2,300 Allstates for the 1952, 53 model years.
The Allstate was built by Kaiser Frazer and was nothing more than a thinly disguised Henry J with all Kaiser badging removed and replaced by Sears Allstate tags.
The 1952 Henry J Vagabond, referred to as Early issue in much of the factory literature, was simply those approximately 7000 1951 models that had not been sold at the end of the 1951 model year with a few trim changes.
The Henry J could be purchased new with one of two engines, a 68 hp four cylinder and a 80 hp six cylinder.

A Very Special Henry J, A 1952 Henry J Convertible
This car was just sold on ebay and I am trying to contact the new owner.
If anyone can help please e mail me

This 1952 Henry J was built by the Kaiser Frazer Corporation. The only other convertible Henry J like it was a prototype car that the factory built to showcase at the auto shows back in the early 1950's. The prototype was then destroyed. This car was  purchased by the seller on eBay from the first owner who saw the prototype 1952 Henry J convertible at an auto show that Kaiser Frazer Corporation attended. At least 30 years ago and he decided to make one based on the detailed pictures of the prototype that he had taken at that auto show.

Eric Godon's convertible which is headlined at the start of this page

The following Henry J convertible pictures were submitted by Ryan Steffey, Naples, Florida and the belongs to his father Robert Steffery who bought the car in 1973. It is a 1955 prototype built for the Detroit auto show but the car was never produced since the Henry J ceased production at the end of 1954. He started the rebuild and now Ryan plans on finishing the project. This car's serial number (Body Number)is  #1 as seen on the name plate shown below.
Ryan knows of only three of these cars being built and this one is the only one remaining.

Jim Reyna submitted the above series of pictures and had the
following to say about them.

"Enclosed are pictures of a 1951 Henry J that I recently bought. The car has been stored for 16 years in a garage.  Three of those years it was outside and exposed  to the weather. The car is oxide and has some surface rust. The windows had ben left down and got the floors rusty. There is some rust holes mostly rust that can be cleaned. The body has no pinholes from rust. It is a six cylinder, no trunk. I started cleaning the chrome and it is in good shape. I am thinking of selling the frame with the rollong chassis transmission and
rear end in tact. The body I plan on using for a street rod."

The Henry J, Overseas

This 1951 Henry J was found in
Colonia City, Republica Oriental del Uruguay in 1998
by Juan Carlos Tuzzolino from Argentina

One of the visitors to this page, Patrick van Griethuysen
from the Netherlands found these two old relics 75 kilometers south of Paris.
It's interesting to see that they were in Europe too.
By the look of those tail fins this one could
be a 1951 or early 52

This one looks like a 1953

This 1953 Henry J was found in Germany and the pictures were submitted by
Juan Carlos Tuzzolino from España.
