This Old Truck page is now divided into 3 section.
This one being the "Old Motorhomes, Travel Trailers and Busses" page
and the links below will take you to the other 2 sections

Old Trucks
Fire Engines

Truck are almost as old as the automobile. Once man discovered the automobile he found that it could also be used to move material from one place to another.
The first known truck was built in 1896 by the German automotive pioneer Gottlieb Daimler.
It didn't take long before American manufactures were converting their cars into trucks. The Model T being one of the most famous with it's Model TT. Other manufactures of the automobile also discovered this market.
There were also a number of independent truck manufactures both large and small. As people began to have more leisure time they wanted to see the country. For many years the adventurous among us went camping or as was at first, tenting. As more and more of us wanted to see the great outdoors and wanted to see it with a bit more comforts then a tent offered we started to see the travel trailer develop. From there motorized travel trailer or as it became known "The motorhome" became the chosen camping vehicle by many.

As highways were developed so was a method of transporting large numbers of people over long distance in relatively more comfort at a lower cost then railways. The bus was taking over the railway's passenger service and in most areas and today has completely dominated the railway in passenger service in all but the very high density corridors.
On this web page I tried to show as many of these as possible.

I would like to invite any one that has a favorite Motorhome, Travel trailer or Bus picture of this period to E mail me a copy

Old Motor Homes, Travel
Trailers and Busses
Through my travels I have come across a number of
old motor home and thought I would share them with you.
The years of the units shown are as close as I could get

This section of John's Old TRUCKS and Motor Home Pictures
includes some really different Motor Homes and campers but
this one is just about as different as you can get.
It's a 1940 COE, Fifth Wheel Camper.
These pictures were submitted by Bob Nerbovig and were used with
the permission of Boyd.B.Underwood. Thanks Boyd

These pictures of a Road Boat "The Decoliner" were submitted by Ron Evans, Long Beach, CA. I was told that this truck started it's life using
1948 / 1950's White model 3000 sheet metal on a 73 GMC front wheel
drive 455 cu/in motorhome chassis. This Truck/Boat Decoliner has had a custom back end made to resemble a boat. The back skin is all stainless.
It can be steered either from the cab or from the upper deck, using a quick-connect linkage to the steering column.

The Decoliner. Half GMC RV, half creative genius by master craftsman Randy Grubb

Now for those of you that thought the the unit shown above was out
of this world, have a look at the "The Decoliner"
To view a video of the Decoliner Click Here
The video features it's builder and owner
A second video shows the Decoliner at Jay Leno's Garage
This motorhome puts a whole new meaning to the word "COOL"

1948-1953 Western Flyer
These three pictures were submitted by  Dan R. Priedeman, Columbus OH 43220 U.S.A with the following comments
My father, Jack Priedeman, purchased Smoky Mountain Tours Co. [“SMT”] in Asheville North Carolina December 7, 1941. It operated in for a very few months in 1942 then shut down for the duration of WW-II. He restarted the company in 1946 and operated it until 1969 when he closed it.

When he purchased SMT, the fleet was all Packards of various configurations seen in the first 2 attachments. The last Packard to be used was the 1941 10-passenger bus you will see in the 3rd attachment. It was last heard of in 2015 at an auction in Auburn(?) Indiana. The buyer paid $50,000 plus an auction fee of $5,000. He planned to ship it to Germany. The auction firm would not release any information about the buyer. We have lost track of it from there.
