and ending with the ones shown above. When I started this page I thought a lot about whether or not I would include the front engine/front wheel drive models. I decided to limit the page to the older air cooled rear engine models that I remember so well |
|
There are many complete histories of this car posted that I felt that I couldn't do it justice. I'll just start it with the following. It all began at the end of the
summer of 1933 when Ferdinand Porsche was summoned to the Hotel Kaiserhof
in Berlin for a meeting with the dictator. Porsche had an outstanding
reputation as an engineer. He had been chief designer for Daimler-Benz,
Auto-Union, and now had his own engineering consultation firm. In a private
conference, Hitler told the engineer his plans for a car.

Tim and Lora Hall of Owensboro, KY USA Lora had the following to say about these cars. "This story could be lengthy. I hope it will keep your interest. Actually my husband, Tim Hall has been involved with VW's for 25 years +. We have had many daily drivers over the years. In our younger days we were in to off road riding. We both had our own rail buggies. His was a one seater and mine a two seater. They had big motors and I could go where ever the guys lead me. My buggy was awesome. I do miss those days. But life does change as we age. Now Tim is mainly collecting vintage cars. It all began with a purchase of four vintage cars at once. I have attached a pix of them when we got them home. Tim knew of these cars for 20 years before he had an opportunity to purchase them. He got these (4) cars and (8) truck loads of NOS parts. I said that he won the "Volkswagen Lottery". Our friend Larry called it the "Mother Lode". No matter what we called it, it was the talk of the VW world around here. People were calling and dropping by just to see what all Tim got. The green car is a 1951, Red is 1952 Zwitter and the Carmel & Creme is 1955. The 1955 is the first one he completed because it was in the best shape of these (4). It was a one owner. It is mine, then he completed the 1952. These cars are restored to original but the 1951 is a different story. This one is the "fun" car. It has his dune buggy motor in it. He had sold everything to do with off roading, except the motor. It is a 2165. He has many other in line to be completed. The last of the "Mother Lode" collection is a 1947. It started out in pretty bad shape. It would not be worth restoring if it were not his oldest car. It is in progress, but it is about 75% complete. He also has a 1959 Karmann Ghia, it is at a body shop and has been there for a long time. Our friend that is working on it, he just works on it between customer's work. Here is a list of all the cars
he has right now. The ones that are not restored are in line to be. It
may take him the rest of his life. But that is his plan. These are the
collection cars, and they are not for sale.

| This car is owned by Garrie Hisco, South Australia
He had the following story to tell about this car. "In 1964 18.04 to be exact my Uncle purchased a VW Beetle . He arrived out front of my parents home to show us his new car. It was very, very trendy to own such a car at that time! As a fourteen year old I was stunned . I loved that car from day one ! He was not a car enthusiast but he looked after it and had regular servicing . He was single until his 59 th year. That must have been around nineteen eighty . Up until that time he would each Sunday visit my parents to share a beer with my Dad. I always said to him that if he traded the car I would pay him the same amount so I could own a one owner car in the family name .! As the years went by I heard nothing as he went to live some distance away and the new wife had her own new car The VW was garaged and used only to pick up the newspaper occasionally . To my amazement a message was received by my Mother to say the new wife had given the car to her son!!!!!!!!. I was so annoyed that the car had gone to another person and I had lost it forever . Family politics prevented me from broaching the subject . I was livered!!!!!!!!!! That was in 1990 or thereabouts . The new wife gave it to her second son whom I had not ever met . He had migrated from Scotland and landed in our country penniless. The car was a new start for him . In 2008 I was in a supermarket and I saw a man on a mobile phone who looked like the new wifes first son whom I had met . I said ‘’ hi Bernard’’ as I walked past. I had not sighted him for twenty years but his distinctive Scottish accent and complexion was still there . This man said ‘’ no, I am not him’’ . I was embarrassed and later at the checkout aplogised for my mistake. He then said to me that he had a brother by that name ! At that point I knew he was the brother and keeper of the keys of the VW !!!!!!!!!!!!! |
I HAD NEVER MET HIM BEFORE BUT there he was
the owner of said car I had lusted for for over forty years!!!!!!!!!!!!
I asked him about the car and I was astonished when he told me he never took the car …………and it was still in the garage at my uncle’s home !! He knew who I was through family and knew I loved that car. He said on the spot that I could have it as he had no interest in it ! He added that only the night before the ‘’new wife’’ had rung a dealer and she had asked him to release the garage door so the scrap dealer could take it away !!!!!!!! We both scrambled for a phone to ring her . Two days later in pouring rain I dragged the car out of the garage and onto a trailer to take it to my garage for safety . The little VW ( Houdini , as I call it now ) is safe and sound in my garage . It was not until after all of the excitement that I notice it had only 35000 miles on the clock ! Confirmed by uncle ,now 87 years old he also had kept all the records of purchase, service books and delivery papers . I have the car registered still in his name on the original plates and regularly drive it . Clearly this car was delivered to me by divine intervention. I am not religious , but who would have believed this true story if it was in a book ! I have had a love affair with this car for 44years! I recently took a photo of the car with the still living uncle by it He was visiting my parents and I surprised him . We both cackled and laughed as I drove him once more around the block in his little VW ………………………… STILL RUNNING PERFECTLY AFTER ALL THIS TIME . I SHALL NOT TOUCH IT IN ANY WAY AS IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION and is completely original ." |

| This van is owned by Andy Griffin from
the UK and he had the following to say about it.
"Above are some pictures of our 1965 Splitty Ex-Ambulance. Built in Germany in November '65 and shipped the same month to Bahrain for service. It was factory fitted with 6 opening side windows (pop outs), a second rear view mirror (wing mirror), asymmetrical headlamps for left-hand traffic and dished pistons fitted to the engine for low octane fuel. Sadly it was decommissioned and re-trimmed as a microbus before it was imported to the UK from Thailand. Since purchasing it from the guy who imported it we have been collecting parts to show its heritage. Such as 2 Ambulance Buzzer buttons and an original 6 volt Ambulance Buzzer/ Sounder, this is now wired into a 12v to 6v convertor. As you can see from the first picture we have an Ambulance step fitted. The Step came from a VW company in the UK. It was frozen and in need of restoration when we got it but now with the help of a pair of pushrod tube seals it now runs freely. The trim for the step was sourced from the USA and the rubber mat from Brazil. |
We have also sourced a Red Cross Light from Austria, a Pair of Bosch Sirens from Australia and a siren relay box from Germany. We don't know when it was decommissioned……maybe it was decommissioned in Bahrain before it was shipped to Thailand? Or maybe it was shipped to Thailand to continue service as an Ambulance??? We have reached the point where we are now looking for more information as how it was when it was in active service. We know from its birth certificate it was painted cream and its interior was upholstered in grey. We know it had a beacon mounted on the roof as we can see the old bolt holes and reinforcing ring in the air box. But what colour was the lens?? Different countries used either blue or red beacons? What were the variations that were fitted inside and out in Bahrain?? If you have any info at all please let John know so he can pass it on to us. Any and all info is greatly appreciated no matter how small or insignificant it may seem." |

The Volkswagen is owned by Lim Chim Hock from Malaysia.
He had the following to say about his car. "My Beetle 1300 cc was registered in 1967. I bought it in 1975 or 1976. Since I had only 1 car then till year 2001 my Beetle worked exceptionally hard. It has been to Thailand, Singapore and even by boat to Sarawak and in Kuching (the state capital) where I worked for 4 years in the 1980's. It has been through the worst of roads. Now its quite old and tired...but I try to look for parts and repair when I am able. It is more than a car. |

from Illinois. Heidi had the following to say about her VW Thing and his 1978 Westfalia. I thought that if you're still adding pictures, you might enjoy a couple of mine. I have a 1978 Westfalia, in restored stock condition (outside has been restored, inside is original, but almost mint condition), and a 1974 Thing. Both are green and have appropriately "green" names; The Pickle Bus and Senor Frogg. We are in the process of getting SrFrogg up to snuff in the running department. He runs, but not too well at the moment, since he sat for about three years in a car port in Florida. He just needs some carb cleanup and fuel system overhauling, and he'll be ready to roll. After that, we start on the always fun process of restoration, but since Froggy's virtually rust free, it won't be all that bad. The PB is my one true love (shhh, don't tell my husband!), and is very similar to the 1976 Sage Green Westy my parents owned when I was a girl. Every time I climb in the PB I smile and, in no time at all, I'm as giddy as a kid on the first day of school break. There is nothing in this world that brings back my happy childhood like that camper does :-) My husband and I love to pack it up and take it out for a weekend. Even in our cold Illinois winters, we manage to enjoy it. We sneak out to the garage where we sit in the camper, drinking beer and playing Monopoly. Sounds goofy, but you should try it some time! We have such fun in the PB. We take it to local cruise nights and car shows, but the most fun of all are our camping trips together. Every family should have one. |

Click on this image for a larger view in a new window He had the following to say about his car Is a five generation VW. There would not be
a great notice talking about a VW beetle. I think thousands of VW around
the world are a five generation vehicle.
|
That VW became on of the most
lovely properties of my Father until he died on January 2003.
After his dead, I received that car as a part on his heritage Since that date up to day I use my VW almost daily. Rarely I give my VW to my son, when his car is on workshop for service. (By the way I'm a professional Mechanic. Also a Photographer) The last member generation in been transported in my VW is my Second Wife's granddaughter. In summary: 1st generation: my first wife's grandfather 2nd generation: my first wife's Father and Mother, and my Parents. 3 rd generation: Me, my wives (the first and the actual), my brothers, my brothers in law. 4th generation: My son. My nieces in some rarely cases when my Father was alive and he let to use it for a while. 5th generation: My actual wife's granddaughter. All of that five generation persons are related to me. So that the reason why I feel some special about that car. The main reason why that car is so special for me is because it was a very valued for my Father. When he died, I began a major reworking job on my VW. It was on shop almost 8 months. I changed all bad or in not ok working conditions body, motor and transmission parts. Re-paint and decorate it. The most interesting issues are: I "upgrade" the engine, making it 1700 cc's from stock 1600 cc's, increasing his power in almost 15 hp's Reduce the stock wheel rim tires from 15" to 14" Put a head protectors over the backs of front seats Put a retractile seat belts on front seats. Actually my VW is 115.000 miles (190.000 KM) Driving it feels so good and smoothly. |

Another interesting variation of the Beetle
1983 Volkswagen Brasilia
| This car is owned by Ali Fakhroo from the Kingdom of Bahrain
The Brasilia was built in Brazil, is the first Brazilian hatch back with five doors. Most of the Brasilia were built with 3 doors (one at the back <hatch back>, passenger door and driver door). Mine is a 5 door, and was mainly used for exports. The car was built between the years 1974 up to 1982. It is powered by a VW 1600 air cooled engine at the back of the car. From the factory it used to come with dual carburetors. However, mine has only a single carburetor now, as spare parts do not exist in this part of the world. It shares all the identical parts of the Type 1 (Beetle). It is actually a Type 1 with a different shell, that is, only the body is different. Our Brasilia is currently the only one in Bahrain. It was imported brand new in the year 1983 from the State of Qatar. |
